Application and scholarship details of University of helsinki


The University of Helsinki is the most versatile research university in Finland, with teaching based on top research. In global research university rankings, the University of Helsinki is among the top 10 or 15 European universities.

The number of students totals 35,000, with another 45,000 engaging in extension studies or in studies at the open university. Nearly 4,000 researchers and teachers of the university work on four separate campuses in Helsinki and in 19 other localities.

Application period

The general application period begins on November 16, 2009 and closes on February 1, 2010 (16:15/4:15 p.m. GMT +2).

The University of Helsinki has only one application period per year for undergraduate (students applying for a Bachelor's programme) and graduate students (Bachelor degree holders applying for a Master's programme).

All graduate applicants register online through the University Admissions Finland's applicant registration service. When you have completed the e-applicant registration, you may print the application from directly from the website or send to your e-mail box as a PDF file (the subject of the file is: Application Form / University Admissions Finland). Your registration is saved on the UAF database.

The printed and signed application and the requested documents are to be sent to the University Admissions Finland: see below for their address and other information.

University of Helsinki International Student Grant

International students who are accepted to study in one of the International Master's Degree Programmes of the University of Helsinki, are, immediately after their acceptance, eligible for financial support described in section one of the International Student Grant below.

To receive detailed information on funding options for registered students of the University of Helsinki, you are advised to check the Orientation Handbook'sGrants and Scholarship section (open the bookmarks on the left to enter that section directly).

The University of Helsinki International Student Grant has two awarding categories:

Students who have been accepted to study in an International Master's Degree Programme (IMDP) are in the beginning of their first year of studies, eligible for the Helsinki University International Student Grant. More information on the amount of the Grant and on the application process is available on the Grant's web page.


Also all degree students, in their second year or beyond in their studies at the University of Helsinki, can apply for the University of Helsinki International Student Grant (UHISG). The Grant is offered once a year and usually ranges from €2000 to €3500. Students of the University of Helsinki can visit the UHISG page on the ALMA intranet for details.

The UH degree students can also apply for the other grants offered by the University, e.g. travel grants, researcher grants, publication grants for PhD dissertation, etc. Please see the Orientation Handbook for details.
