The University of Tampere


The University of Tampere embraces many fields of science and its research profile is extensive and multidisciplinary. There are six faculties and nine independent institutes. The University of Tampere is the biggest provider of higher education in Finland for social sciences and the accompanying administrative sciences.

Some 14,600 students are currently pursuing degrees at the University of Tampere. Every year approximately one thousand master's degrees and one hundred doctoral degrees are produced. The personnel number about 2,200. For 2008 the entire budget of the University was in the range of 150 million Euros.

The Chancellor of the University is Ms Krista Varantola, the Rector is Ms Kaija Holli and the Administrative Director is Mr Timo Lahti.

Tampere, the home city of the University is the third biggest city in Finland. There are also activities in smaller towns of Hämeenlinna, Pori, Seinäjoki, Valkeakoski and Virrat. Approximately one million people live in the area over which the influence of the University extends.
