FINNISH ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS

Finnish Academy of Fine Arts provides the highest university-level theoretical and practical training in Finland in
fine arts. It seeks to promote research in the fine arts and to act as a member of the international community of
academic education in arts. The purpose of the Academy is to provide broad professional artistic training whilst
taking into account new developments in contemporary art.

The Academy was founded in 1848 by a private foundation. From the beginning of year 1993 the status of the Academy
has been raised to university level. 3,5 years of complete studies lead to the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts,
the Master's degree takes two years longer to complete .

During the academic year 2009-2010 the number of students is about 260. Full-time teachers are all practising artists
of repute, about 50 teachers and lecturers are working on hourly basis. In addition the Academy invites tens of visiting
lecturers and welcomes annually several foreign artists from all over the world to meet students.

FINNISH ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS

The Finnish Academy of Fine Arts has provided the highest education in fine arts in Finland already for 160 years.
The Finnish Academy of Fine Arts today is a university focusing on contemporary art education and offering the degrees of
Bachelor, Master and Doctor of Fine Arts.

The studies leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (lower degree) aims to provide the student with the artistic,
cognitive and theoretical basic abilities and skills required by a visual artist. After completing their degree, the
students have the resources they need to work as visual artists and to carry on to the studies leading to Master's degree
and lifelong learning.

The Master of Fine Arts degree (higher degree) aims to offer the students the resources to function as an independent and
analytical artist in society and the world. The Masters of Fine Arts have a thorough command of the instruments of fine
arts and an understanding of the current significance and history of those instruments. They are qualified to act as
experts and developers of fine arts and are ready to continue to postgraduate education in art.

The objective of the Doctor of Fine Arts degree (postgraduate degree) is that the students have a profound understanding
of their own field of interest and achieve the qualifications needed to create high-level, artistically mature work and
that they are able to carry out independent, innovative research in their own field.

The studies leading to the Bachelor's and Master's degrees are organised in degree programmes. These programmes focus on
specific disciplines of fine arts requiring artistic talent and expertise and seek to develop the arts further.
The Academy offers degree programmes in sculpture, painting, printmaking and time and space arts.

There are three different application procedures available to those who wish to study at the Academy. Regular admission
is for students who apply for the Bachelor's and Master's degree studies, which take 5.5 years in total. Applicants who have an eligible Bachelor's degree or equivalent can apply for the two-year training leading to a Master's degree in the special Master of Fine Arts admission. Those who have an eligible Master's degree or equivalent can apply for postgraduate studies in the four-year doctoral training.

1. REGULAR ADMISSION 2010 (BFA+MFA 5,5 years, (210 + 120 credits)

You can apply for studies leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in the regular admission. (You choose a degree programme after being admitted to the Academy, during your first study year.)

Regular admission to the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts' 5,5 years Master degree programme will conform to the nationwide schedule of joint applications.

The application period for the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts is 1.3 - 16.4.2010. During this period, the electronic application form can be opened and filled in the website: https://www.yliopistohaku.fi/.

The original artworks and a printed copy of the electronic application form must be delivered directly to the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. The dates for delivering will be published later. The admission guide 2010 will also be updated in the Academy's web site December-January.

2. SPECIAL MFA ADMISSION - Master of Fine Arts

In the special MFA admission you can apply for the studies leading to the Master of Fine Arts degree (2 years, 120 credits). Admission period 15.2 - 30.3.2010

The annual total intake of students is 45, admitted through the regular admission and the special MFA-program admission. See special MFA -admission.

3. DOCTORAL STUDIES

The Doctor of Fine Arts (DFA) degree is the postgraduate degree in the Academy of Fine Arts. You apply to the postgraduate
studies in an open process. The Academy admits 2 - 4 new student yearly. See doctoral studies.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The Academy has no special international application procedure or special English programmes for international students.
Foreign students participate in the normal application procedures. The Academy is an international university.
Some 20% of the students are international, both degree or exchange students. The language of all degree programs is Finnish but the Academy provides several courses taught in English. Also some of our seminars and lecture series are taught in English on a regular basis. Even when teaching in English is not available, it is often possible to complete courses through independent study. You can write your essays and exams in English.
Several foreign guest lecturers, teachers and exhibitions visit the Academy annually.

Turku School of Economics is one of the largest institutes in Finland for education in economic science. Backed by its

internationally recognised business expertise, the university offers broad-based training in Turku and Pori,

other business and finance-related subjects and foreign languages.

The fully established position of the School as a scientific expert and societal influence is based on decades of

Basic Information

In addition to two thousand aiming at a degree, hundreds of students who are supplementing their skills study each year
at Turku School of Economics. In addition to Turku, we operate in Pori, Tampere and Helsinki with a staff totalling 350,
in five departments and five separate units.

The total number of students working for a degree at Turku School of Economics is approximately 2000. Each year, about 200 graduates from our university receive their Bachelor or Master’s degree. All those interested in joining at a Bachelor of Economic Sciences education programme participate in an entrance examination.

In addition to instruction leading to a degree, Turku School of Economics also arranges continuing and adult education. About 800 participate annually in continuing education, with 600 taking part in Open University courses.

In addition to Turku, we offer education in the economic sciences in Pori. We also function at the Finland Futures Research Centre facilities in Helsinki and Tampere.

An applicant who already has an appropriate Bachelor's/Master's degree may apply for a Master's degree program. The appropriate degrees are defined in the Admission Guide. The Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration) degree is a higher academic degree (second-cycle degree) in Finland and equals to 120 ECTS credits which corresponds to two years of full-time studying. The student may also be assigned supplementary studies (max 30 ECTS credits). Studying towards the Master's degree does not suit to students working full time. Depending on the course, the lectures may be during the daytime or also in the evening.

It is possible to apply in HSE's Master's admissions even with a degree not yet completed. However, the degree must be completed by 31 July 2010. In addition to the studies of the degree giving the eligibility to apply, also other studies taken at a Finnish or non-Finnish university/polytechnic may, by the decision of HSE, be taken into consideration. However, only studies completed by the application deadline, 26 February 2010 at 16:15, can be considered (completed meaning that the applicant is able to present a transcript or equivalent).

In Master's admissions 2009, it was possible to apply to one or two of the eight degree programs taught in English: Economics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Information and Service Management, International Business or International Business+CEMS, International Business Communication, Logistics and Service Economics, or Marketing. Please see Admission Guide 2009 for further information. Master’s admissions are explained in chapter 4. Admission Guide includes admission criteria (who can apply and in what conditions), general information related to studying at HSE and in Finland, degrees at HSE, cost of study (see for example chapters 7.3 and 5.6), language test requirements, taking GMAT (chapter 9, test that is used in Master's admissions), etc. There are not really tuition fees and, thus, HSE does not offer scholarships either. Application form includes information on the enclosures needed for the application.

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and Language Test

The deadline for GMAT result and language test result (if required, see Admission Guide) is the same as the deadline for applications. For GMAT result the unofficial score report, if got from the test organization, is enough by the application deadline, but the official report must come later directly from the test organization.

GMAT is required in admission groups 2, 3 and 4. It is useful to get to know the test structure and practice the test before taking it. More information in the Admission Guide. Please book your test session early enough. The names of the universities where the result is wished to be sent is selected in the test session. HSE's GMAT Program Code is C1N-0J-83 ("MSc Degree Programs"). HSE expects to get Official Score Report straight from the test organization.

Language test is required always when the applicant’s native language is not Finnish, Swedish, Lappish or English. It cannot be waived even if the previous degree was completed in English. See Admission Guide for the language tests and levels that are accepted. HSE does not necessarily expect to get the score report from the test organization. For Toefl, the code for HSE is 0636 (Graduate Schools 02), note: the code still has HSE's old name in it (Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration).

The University of Vaasa offers studies in business, languages, culture and communications, administration, and technology.

Studies in the Faculty of Business Studies consist of all business sciences (management and organisations, accounting and finance, and marketing), economics, and business law. The Faculty also offers studies in entrepreneurship.

THE MASTERS PROGRAMME

Presently, there are five Master's degree programmes available in English at the University of Vaasa: Master's Degree Programme in Finance, Master's Degree Programme in International Business, Master's Degree Programme in Intercultural Studies in Communication and Administration, Master's Programme in Telecommunication Engineering, and Master's Programme in Industrial Management.

The Master's Degree Programme in International Business and the Master's Degree Programme in Finance are mainly aimed at international students. The Master's Programme in Telecommunication Engineering, the Master's Programme in Industrial Management, and the Master's Degree Programme in Intercultural Studies in Communication and Administration are open both for international and Finnish students.

There are many non-degree programmes designed especially for international exchange students. The programmes are the following: Scandinavian Business Studies, International Business Studies, East-West Business Studies, European Affairs Studies International Finance Studies, Multimedia Authoring Systems Studies, Industrial Management Studies, Telecommunication Engineering Studies, Public Management Studies, Intercultural Studies Multilingualism Studies (working knowledge in Swedish required), Studies in Swedish and Scandinavian Languages (working knowledge in Swedish is required) and German Language and Literature Studies (working knowledge in German required).

Application Form for Master's Degree Programmes

The link at the bottom of the page will direct you to the electronic application form used by the University of Vaasa.

Application to all five Master’s programmes in English offered by the University of Vaasa must be submitted in the electronic application system. All applicants, both international and Finnish, will apply to these international programmes through the system. The application period for all five Master’s programmes is 1 January – 28 February annually. There is no application fee for the Master's programmes offered by the University of Vaasa.

Please fill in the application form carefully. Fields marked with blue asterisk (*) are obligatory. Submit the form by clicking on the button at the bottom of the form. After submitting the information, the system will generate an application form based on the information submitted in the system. Please remember to print out the generated form.

After you have filled in the electronic application form, you should print the generated form, sign and send it with all the required documents (application enclosures) to the mailing address given by the system. Your application is not complete and cannot be processed unless the printed and signed application form with all the obligatory documents has been received. The deadline for submitting the required documents is 9 March.

Please note that if you apply for more than one programme, you need to submit a full application file (the application form and all requested enclosures) for each programme you apply for. The University of Tampere embraces many fields of science and its research profile is extensive and multidisciplinary. There are six faculties and nine independent institutes. The University of Tampere is the biggest provider of higher education in Finland for social sciences and the accompanying administrative sciences.

The University of Lapland is a broadly-based, international centre for education and research located in Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle . ACADEMIC CALENDAR

The academic year at the University of Lapland is comprised of two semesters. The autumn semester is from August 1 to December 31, and the spring semester is from January 1 to July 31. The annual opening ceremony is always held on the first Monday in September. Teaching during the academic year is divided in five teaching periods.

The University of Kuopio has an international reputation in the fields of health, environment and well-being, with particular strengths in biotechnology, biosciences and molecular medicine. The University's latest fields of expertise are business administration and technology education.

Five faculties, over 60 teaching and reseach institutions
The University contains five faculties:

The University of Joensuu was established in 1969. It includes eight faculties and nine non-faculty institutes. The University offers undergraduate and graduate degree in eight different fields:

The University has over 8500 students, 1100 of whom are on the Savonlinna campus. Every year approximately 1500 new students are admitted. The general application period begins on November 16, 2009 and closes on February 1, 2010 (16:15/4:15 p.m. GMT +2).

The University of Helsinki has only one application period per year for undergraduate (students applying for a Bachelor's programme) and graduate students (Bachelor degree holders applying for a Master's programme).

All graduate applicants register online through the University Admissions Finland's applicant registration service. When you have completed the e-applicant registration, you may print the application from directly from the website or send to your e-mail box as a PDF file (the subject of the file is: Application Form / University Admissions Finland). University of Helsinki International Student Grant

International students who are accepted to study in one of the International Master's Degree Programmes of the University of Helsinki, are, immediately after their acceptance, eligible for financial support described in section one of the International Student Grant below.

To receive detailed information on funding options for registered students of the University of Helsinki, you are advised to check the Orientation Handbook'sGrants and Scholarship section (open the bookmarks on the left to enter that section directly).

The University of Helsinki International Student Grant has two awarding categories:

Students who have been accepted to study in an International Master's Degree Programme (IMDP) are in the beginning of their first year of studies, eligible for the Helsinki University International Student Grant. More information on the amount of the Grant and on the application process is available on the Grant's web page.

Also all degree students, in their second year or beyond in their studies at the University of Helsinki, can apply for the University of Helsinki International Student Grant (UHISG). The Grant is offered once a year and usually ranges from €2000 to €3500. Students of the University of Helsinki can visit the UHISG page on the ALMA intranet for details.

The UH degree students can also apply for the other grants offered by the University, e.g. travel grants, researcher grants, publication grants for PhD dissertation, etc. Please see the Orientation Handbook for details.

Abo Akademi University: Finland

The present Åbo Akademi University is a medium-size, state-run, multidisciplinary and Swedish-language university, celebrating its establishment in 1918. The first Academy in Åbo was founded in 1640. The re-established University was greatly influenced by the model from the Swedish period and its aim was to strengthen Swedish culture in Finland.

Wish of the main donors
In 1918, a group of wealthy persons in Åbo and its surroundings donated funds for the establishment of a Swedish university. It was to be a multidisciplinary seat of learning and thus its first professors were humanists, natural scientists and political scientists. The first students were admitted in January 1919.

Professional studies
The donors also saw the need for Swedish-speaking engineers, clergymen and economists. Consequently, within a few years, education in these fields was also commenced.

Development after the Second World War
The post-war economic situation was dire, and the Åbo Akademi University Endowment encountered problems in financing the activities of the University. The first state subsidy was granted in 1951 and state funding became permanent in 1963. The University became fully state-run in 1981.

New fields of education
In the 1950s, the educational fields in Åbo were supplemented with programmes in pharmacy and psychology. A reform of teacher education resulted in Åbo Akademi establishing a unit in Vasa in 1974. In the early 1990s, caring science and political science were added to the fields taught in Vasa and training of Associates in Law was introduced in Åbo. The student body grew tenfold between the years 1952 and 1995, and today it numbers 7,000.
